What Is Amazon EC2?
Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) is the core compute service of AWS, providing resizable virtual servers (instances) in the cloud. It is the foundation of AWS's infrastructure, used by millions of customers to run applications ranging from simple websites to complex machine learning workloads.
Key Features
EC2 offers hundreds of instance types optimized for different workloads: general purpose (M-series), compute-optimized (C-series), memory-optimized (R-series), storage-optimized (I-series), and GPU instances (P and G series) for ML and graphics.
Pricing models include On-Demand (pay by the second), Reserved Instances (1-3 year commitments for up to 72 percent savings), Spot Instances (up to 90 percent savings for interruptible workloads), and Savings Plans. Auto Scaling automatically adjusts capacity based on demand.
Key Capabilities
EC2 integrates with every AWS service — EBS for persistent storage, VPC for networking, ELB for load balancing, and IAM for access control. It supports Linux, Windows, and macOS instances across 30+ global regions.
