Google +1 was a social plugin and sharing button created and launched by Google in 2011 as part of the company's attempt to compete with other social networks like Facebook. The +1 button allowed users who were signed into their Google Account to publicly show their appreciation for pieces of content on the web, including articles, videos, or other media.
When logged-in users clicked on the +1 button on a webpage, a +1 would be recorded and added to the page's +1 count, visible to all users. This allowed content creators and publishers to see which pages and content were most popular and being shared by users. For users, +1's served as a way to give public recommendations to their friends and followers about their favorite content.
At its peak following the launch, +1 buttons were fairly ubiquitous and recognizable on websites alongside other social sharing buttons. However, they did not reach the same level of adoption and usage as competing platforms like Facebook's Like button. As a result, Google discontinued the Google +1 button in 2019 as the company shifted its focus away from the struggling Google+ social network.
