A popular indie platformer video game series where players guide a character up a tower, jumping from floor to floor without falling, aiming to climb as high as possible.
Icy Tower is a series of popular indie platformer video games developed by Swedish programmer Johan Peitz and Free Lunch Design. The first Icy Tower game launched in 2001 as a free downloadable game for Windows. It quickly became a hit in the indie and casual gaming scene.
In Icy Tower, players guide a constantly moving character up a tall tower by making well-timed jumps from floor to floor without falling off. The tower has randomly generated floors and platforms which adds to the challenge and variety in gameplay. The main objective is to climb higher and higher up the never-ending tower to achieve the highest score possible before eventually falling down.
The simplicity and addictive one-button gameplay made Icy Tower easy to pick up but extremely difficult to master. Players need good timing and rhythm to consecutively jump higher up the ever-changing floors of the generated tower. This high degree of challenge and replayability contributed greatly to the game's popularity.
Following the huge success of the first game, several official and fan-made sequels were released over the years. Icy Tower 1.4 (2004) introduced new features like online multiplayer. Icy Tower 2: New Journey (2008) brought improved 3D graphics and gameplay tweaks while keeping the core mechanics mostly the same. Fans and modders also released unofficial spin-offs like Icy Tower Extended.
