What is Imeem?
Imeem was a social media and music discovery website that launched in 2007. It allowed users to upload, share, and stream music and video content, and connect with friends and fans. Some key features of Imeem included:
- Music player: Users could upload their own music library and create playlists to share. The site also offered free streaming of many songs.
- Artist profiles: Unsigned artists and bands could create profiles to share their music and connect with listeners. Imeem offered tools to help artists promote their content.
- Social features: Users could follow friends and artists, comment on content, create groups based on shared interests, and receive recommendations.
- Mobile apps: Imeem offered iOS and Android apps to access features and content on the go.
At its peak in 2008, Imeem claimed over 20 million users. However, the site struggled to develop a sustainable business model. It generated some revenue through digital advertising but not enough to cover high licensing fees paid to music labels. In 2009, MySpace acquired Imeem for around $1 million and subsequently shut the service down, migrating some users and music data to MySpace Music.
