What is ITrash?

iTrash is a free and open-source utility application designed to securely and permanently delete files on Mac computers. It goes beyond simply moving files to the Trash by overwriting the data to prevent later recovery using data recovery software or forensics.

When you delete a file normally, the reference to it is removed from the file system, but the actual data remains on the drive. With special recovery tools, this deleted data can often still be restored. iTrash overwrites the data to replace it with meaningless gibberish which cannot be recovered.

iTrash integrates seamlessly with the Mac Finder allowing you to securely delete files the same way you would move them to the Trash. Multiple overwrite options are available to balance security and speed including a 35-pass DOD standard wipe.
