Fighting video game series with fast-paced combat and combo-heavy gameplay, originally developed by Rare and first released in 1994.
Killer Instinct is a fighting video game series originally developed by the British studio Rare and published by Midway Games. The first Killer Instinct was released in arcades in 1994 and featured advanced graphics and gameplay for the time, including pre-rendered character sprites and elaborate combo systems.
The original Killer Instinct featured a roster of bizarre characters like the werewolf Sabrewulf, the alien Fulgore, and the skeletal Spinal. It was known for over-the-top violent finishing moves called No Mercies. The game was followed by a sequel, Killer Instinct 2, in 1996. This second installment tweaked the gameplay balance and introduced new characters like the vampire Mira, cyborg TJ Combo, and voodoo priestess Maya.
After a long hiatus, Killer Instinct was revived in 2013 with a reboot simply titled Killer Instinct. Developed by Double Helix Games under supervision from original Killer Instinct creator Ken Lobb, this reboot featured updated visuals and a new playable roster for a new generation of fighting game fans. The reboot was continued by Iron Galaxy Studios and saw two seasons of content over the next couple years.
As of 2022, the future of Killer Instinct remains uncertain, but the series has left its mark as one of the most unique and stylized fighting franchises in gaming history. With its over-the-top combos and distinct visual flair, Killer Instinct stands out amongst fighting games and has earned a cult following over the decades.
