What is Labstep?

Labstep is a cloud-based electronic lab notebook (ELN) designed specifically for scientists in academic research environments to better organize their work and streamline research workflows. Labstep aims to replace traditional paper notebooks by allowing researchers to plan experiments, take notes, attach files, access everywhere, enable collaboration, ensure data integrity, and securely backup and share research.

With Labstep researchers can create projects to organize their work, quick-add experiments on the go, write notes using text, tags, Markdown formatting, embed images/graphs/files, follow templated or free-form experiment workflows, attach protocols/presentations/articles, get reminders/task lists, enable collaboration, use quick search across projects, keep full data provenance via version history, integrate with instruments and cloud storage, ensure reproducibility, comply with IP policy, and give controlled access to selected collaborators or oversight committees. Backup, access controls, authentication protections, data encryption adhere to industry security and privacy standards.

The user interface and features aim to adapt to any scientific workflows allowing flexibility for diverse research teams and institutions. Labstep also has an API to enable connections with instruments, institutional systems, analysis programs, and other research software. Overall Labstep tries to keep things simple and focused specifically on optimizing and sharing scientific research.
