LeakedSource: Data Breach Search and Protection

Find out if your data has been compromised or leaked with LeakedSource, a now-defunct website that provided access to data from breaches and leaks, but charged fees for removal or protection.

What is LeakedSource?

LeakedSource was a website founded in late 2015 that aggregated and allowed searchable access to data from major data leaks and breaches. The service compiled databases of leaked or stolen usernames, passwords, email addresses and other personal information that had been made public after hacks and security compromises of popular websites and services.

The purpose of LeakedSource was to allow internet users to search for their own information and see if it had been compromised or leaked in any publicly known data breaches. Users could enter their email address, username or other details to check if that information appeared in any of the breached data indexed by LeakedSource from hacks affecting sites like LinkedIn, Tumblr and MySpace.

While LeakedSource provided a way for people to check if their data was secure, it was controversial because it made highly sensitive personal information easily searchable and public. LeakedSource charged a fee in order for people to remove or protect their information from appearing on its service if it was found in the data.

In early 2017 after increased scrutiny into its practices and data collection, LeakedSource shut down its service and website. Though it provided a way to search compromised data, the monetization of leaked personal information as well as aggregating and republishing it en masse was deemed unethical by many critics.
