Free, open-source turn-based strategy game based on Risk, featuring single player and multiplayer modes against up to 5 opponents, hotseat and network games.
Lux Delux is a free, open-source turn-based strategy game based on the classic board game Risk. It was originally created by Sillysoft Games and released in 2002, but after Sillysoft went out of business the source code was released publicly.
The gameplay of Lux Delux involves conquering territories on a map of the world by engaging in battle with computer or human opponents. At the start of each turn, players receive reinforcements based on the number of territories they control, which they can then use to attack neighboring territories.Battles are resolved automatically by the game engine based on the number of armies in the attacking and defending territories.
Lux Delux improves upon Risk by adding features like mission objectives, neutral armies, fortifications, and country bonuses. The AI of the computer opponents is reasonably strong and provides a decent challenge. The graphics, while basic, have an old-school charm to them.
In addition to single player against up to 5 AI opponents, Lux Delux supports multiplayer hotseat on the same computer as well as online multiplayer over the internet or LAN. There is even a built-in map editor to allow players to create custom worlds.
With its active community expanding the game with new maps and gameplay options, Lux Delux offers a compelling free alternative to commercial turn-based strategy games for fans of Risk or similar conquer-the-world style games.
