Real-time strategy city building game released in 2000, allowing players to indirectly control their kingdom by placing buildings and rewards to influence heroes to complete quests and defend against monsters.
Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim is a real-time strategy and city-building game developed by Cyberlore Studios and released in 2000. In Majesty, players take on the role of a king or queen seeking to rebuild their fantasy kingdom after a disaster. Rather than controlling individual units directly, players place buildings, offer rewards, and cast spells to entice independent heroes and adventurers to complete quests and defend the realm.
Gameplay revolves around influencing these heroes to slay wandering monsters, capture resources, and expand the kingdom's territory. Heroes range across character classes like warriors, rangers, wizards and rogues, each with their own unique skills and abilities. Over the course of the game, heroes gain experience levels and the kingdom grows in prosperity and power. However, failure to keep heroes adequately equipped and rewarded can cause them to leave the player's kingdom to work for a rival monarch instead.
With its hands-off approach and focus on colony management over direct combat, Majesty stood out from other RTS games when it launched. Reviews praised the novelty of its hero system and simplicity of its interface. An expansion pack called Majesty: The Northern Expansion was released in 2002 and added new monsters, heroes, buildings, and maps. The Majesty IP was later purchased by Paradox Interactive, who released updated versions of the game and a sequel, Majesty 2, in 2009.
