What is MeteoSwiss?

MeteoSwiss is the official weather service provider for Switzerland, providing the public, government agencies, and private companies with comprehensive weather and climate information. It was created in 2016 from the merger of MeteoSwiss and Swiss Federal Office of Climatology and Meteorology.

MeteoSwiss issues public weather forecasts and warnings on storms, heavy rain and snowfall, heatwaves, cold snaps and strong winds. It monitors weather conditions across Switzerland using observation stations, weather radars, satellites and computer models. Services include nowcasts, 3-day forecasts, 10-day outlooks, month/season previews, climate normals and extremes data.

For the aviation industry, MeteoSwiss supplies aerodrome forecasts, flight planning data, en-route and landing forecasts. It also conducts aviation climatology, training, research and development. Customized services are offered to other economic sectors like energy companies, agriculture, sports events, tourism and water management.

As a government agency, MeteoSwiss performs climate monitoring to detect trends and analyze the impacts of climate change in Switzerland. This data is reported to international organizations and used for Swiss climate policymaking. The World Meteorological Organization and European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasts are key partners for measurement standards, modeling and forecasting collaboration.
