What is Musical.ly?

musical.ly was a social media app and website that launched in 2014, focused on enabling users to create and share short music videos. It included a variety of creative tools and effects that allowed users to easily edit their videos to match the music. musical.ly gained huge popularity among teenagers and young people who enjoyed expressing themselves through lip-syncing and dancing to popular songs.

On musical.ly, users could film videos up to 15 seconds in length and set them to snippets of their favorite songs. The app had a variety of fun creative effects similar to Snapchat filters that could be added on top of videos with just a few taps. Users could browse popular music clips on a main feed tailored to their interests and follow favorite creators in order to see more of their content.

Through its talented community of creators, easy-to-use video editing tools, and ability to share videos across other social platforms, musical.ly quickly developed a loyal userbase of young content creators and viewers around the world. At its peak, it had over 200 million registered users. In November 2017, musical.ly was acquired by Chinese video sharing app TikTok. The following year, the two apps merged under the TikTok brand globally outside of China.
