What is Nimses?
Nimses is a social networking app launched in 2019 that sought to pay users for their time and interactions. The core feature of the app is nims, an in-app digital currency that users can earn by performing activities like checking into locations, going live, posting photos/videos, and connecting with other users.
When Nimses launched, nims could supposedly be exchanged for real goods and services, encouraging people to accumulate as much digital currency as possible. Each user started with a finite number of nims available per day, so they had to actively engage with the app in order to earn more. Popular users who attracted a large following could earn substantial nims rewards.
Nimses usage and growth exploded at first across Eastern Europe and Russia. The ability to actually monetize one's social media activities made it hugely popular, especially with younger demographics. However, over time engagement started to decline as some of Nimses' core rewards-based features were scaled back.
While still active in some regions today, Nimses ultimately failed to sustain its initial viral growth. The difficulty of converting nims into real-world value diminished the appeal for many users. Still, it offered an early prototype of what a social media economy could look like.
WhatsApp, Slack, Instagram, Microsoft Teams, Telegram, Snapchat, Facebook, LinkedIn, Facebook Messenger, Gab, Bastyon are some alternatives to Nimses.
