What is LinkedIn?
LinkedIn is an American business and employment-oriented online service that operates via websites and mobile apps. Launched on May 5, 2003, the platform is mainly used for professional networking and career development, and allows job seekers to post their CVs and employers to post jobs.
With over 740 million registered members as of 2021, LinkedIn is the largest professional network on the internet. The company has offices around the world, headquarters being in Sunnyvale, California.
The core of LinkedIn is the connections between users and the ability to leverage those connections. Users can invite anyone to connect, whether an existing member or not. LinkedIn displays how a user is connected to the person whose profile they are looking at, highlighting shared connections, educational institutions or employers.
In addition to profile building and networking services, LinkedIn provides premium subscription packages to recruiters and sales professionals that allow them to search member profiles based on various traits. Subscription fees sustain LinkedIn's earnings, with $7.5 billion in annual revenue as of late 2020 and over 75% coming from its Talent Solutions division.
LinkedIn is known for its keyword-targeting ad system that allows advertisers to target members based on industry, function, seniority, geographic location, interests, skills, university and other traits and measures. It is one of the first social networks to successfully incorporate advertising into its platform.
