What is Sharity?

Sharity is an open-source, self-hosted file sync and share platform that puts an emphasis on security and privacy. It allows users to store their files in the cloud like Dropbox or Google Drive, but with the key difference that all data is encrypted locally on the user's device before being uploaded to the Sharity server.

This local encryption means that even the Sharity server cannot access the plaintext contents of a user's synced files - only the encrypted version. Users hold the decryption keys, so only they can access their original data. This provides an extra layer of protection and prevents malicious actors from easily obtaining private files should they gain access to the server.

In addition to client-side encryption, Sharity also aims to give users more control over where their data is stored. As it is self-hosted, individuals or companies can install it on their own server or VPS rather than rely on a third-party service. There are also federated server options in development to allow private file sharing across different Sharity instances while maintaining encryption.

Other notable features include customizable storage quotas for users, role-based access controls, native desktop and mobile apps for file syncing, and integration with existing storage solutions like S3, WebDAV and OpenStack Swift. The project is open-source under the AGPLv3 license, so the code is publicly auditable.
