Stegodon: Privacy-Focused Decentralized Social Media

A decentralized social media platform on ActivityPub, allowing users to own their data and control sharing permissions through federation.

What is Stegodon?

Stegodon is a decentralized, federated social networking platform focused on privacy and ownership of user data. It is built on top of the ActivityPub protocol, allowing users from different Stegodon software instances to follow and interact with one another seamlessly.

Some key features of Stegodon include:

  • User ownership of data - Unlike centralized social networks, your posts and profile information are stored on your own Stegodon instance rather than company servers. This gives you control over your privacy settings.
  • Federation - You can follow users on other independently operated Stegodon instances. This allows you to expand your social reach beyond just those using your home instance.
  • Customizability - Stegodon provides tools for running your own independently operated instance with your own rules, cultures and policies. Each instance can have its own theme and set of features enabled.
  • Accessibility - The platform is entirely open source software and avoids any vendor lock-in or restrictions. Any technically capable individual or organization can freely operate a Stegodon node.

If privacy and user control are priorities for your social media experience, Stegodon provides a compelling alternative to closed, centralized networks through open federation based on the user-owned ActivityPub protocol.
