What is Super Star Trek?

Super Star Trek is a free and open-source computer game originally based on the text-based Star Trek game from the 1970s. It is a space combat simulator set in the Star Trek universe where the player commands a Constitution-class starship to explore the galaxy and battle enemies such as Klingons, Romulans, and other hostile ships.

The game features a pseudo-3D first person view of space on the main screen, with a heads-up display showing shields, weapons, and other key systems status. The player issues commands to navigate around star systems, scan planets and ships, and engage in ship-to-ship combat. There are a variety of weapons such as phasers and photon torpedoes to use in battles.

As captain of the starship, the player manages power allocation between key systems like weapons, shields, and propulsion. There is also a crew roster with characters that have stats in different abilities, which influence things like repair times. The game features an open-ended structure where the player is free to explore star systems, complete missions, attack enemies, and upgrade their starship.

Originally created in 1971 at Dartmouth College, Super Star Trek has been ported to many platforms over the decades and has an enduring legacy as one of the earliest space combat games. The open source version combines several different iterations into one definitive version with enhanced graphics and gameplay.
