A real-time strategy video game series focused on large-scale robotic warfare, where players command enormous armies and construct experimental war machines.
The Supreme Commander series is a franchise of real-time strategy video games developed by Gas Powered Games and published by THQ. The games are noted for their enormous scale, with battles taking place on maps up to 81 square km in size and players able to construct experimental war machines and command enormous armies with up to 1000 units under their control.
The original Supreme Commander was released in 2007 to critical acclaim. Players take control of one of three factions, each with a unique technology tree and array of mechanical units. The game featured a strategic zoom allowing players to seamlessly transition from an overhead view of the entire battlefield to a closeup view for micromanagement. The game also focused on resource management and expanding production capacity to fuel the construction of massive armies.
The series continued with the stand-alone expansion Forged Alliance in 2007, adding new units and two new factions. Supreme Commander 2 was released in 2010 with improved graphics and streamlined gameplay. A third game was planned but ultimately cancelled when developer Gas Powered Games went bankrupt in 2013.
The Supreme Commander games are regarded as some of the prime examples of the enormous scale possible in real-time strategy titles. They allow players to employ combined arms strategies with land, air, and naval units. The games emphasize strategic decision-making over fast reflexes, with the sheer size of battles requiring coordination of multiple fronts and efficient economic management to succeed.
