tbh is a mobile-only social networking app launched in 2017 that allows users to anonymously pay compliments to people in their social circles. The app's name stands for 'to be honest.'
Here's how tbh works: Users sign up either with their phone number or by importing contacts from their smartphone. They then select friends and classmates they want to anonymously compliment from their contact list. Users can send someone a tbh either by selecting one of several automatically generated compliments or by creating their own custom compliment.
When someone receives a tbh, they won't see who it came from, only that an anonymous friend said something nice about them. Tbh limits user compliments to 100 per day to encourage thoughtfulness. It also uses filters and human moderators to screen messages for anything inappropriate before they are sent.
The app quickly became popular among teenagers in the U.S. after launching. In October 2017, Facebook acquired tbh for an undisclosed sum in order to enhance its presence in the teen social networking space dominated by Snapchat and Instagram.
