What is Texturing?

Texturing software is used by 3D artists and animators to create and manipulate textures that can be applied to 3D models to increase realism and add detail. Textures are digital images like colors, patterns, and photos that can be mapped to the surface of a virtual 3D asset much like paint on a physical object.

Texturing tools allow users to create and edit different types of maps including:

  • Diffuse/Albedo maps - basic color and patterns
  • Normal maps - simulate small surface details without more geometry
  • Bump maps - simulate details by interacting with lighting
  • Displacement maps - physically deform the mesh surface
  • Ambient Occlusion maps - simulate shadows in crevices
  • Specular maps - control shininess and reflections

Applying high quality textures is essential for creating realistic 3D models and environments in video games, films, VR and architectural visualization. Texturing artists use advanced software to paint textures by hand or generate them procedurally. Key features include layering, filters, masking, scanning physical materials and importing images.

Popular texturing software includes Substance Painter, Quixel, Mari, 3D Coat, Allegorithmic, dDo and more. These tools integrate into digital content creation pipelines allowing textures to be exported and applied to models in 3D animation packages.
