What is The Swapper?

The Swapper is an indie puzzle platform video game developed by Facepalm Games and released in 2013. In The Swapper, the player controls a character equipped with a device that can create up to four clones of themselves and swap their consciousness between these clones.

The game takes place across seven areas set in the abandoned spaceship Theseus. Each area presents the player with a series of physics and puzzle-platforming challenges that must be solved using the clone-swapping mechanics and various tools and environmental features. For example, certain areas may only be accessible by one clone holding down a button that lets another cross a gap.

The goal in each area is simply to find the exit by manipulating the clone mechanics in inventive ways. There is no combat and the challenge comes entirely from navigating the complex, interconnected spaces of the station. The Swapper has garnered critical acclaim for its atmospheric art direction, minimalist storytelling and inventive puzzle design that continually reinvents the central cloning mechanic.
