Thorium Browser — Fast Privacy Browser with Chrome Extensions (2026)

Thorium is a speed-optimized Chromium browser with no Google tracking. Supports Chrome extensions, HEVC video, and benchmarks faster than Chrome on modern hardware.

What is Thorium Browser?

What Is Thorium Browser?

Thorium is a Chromium-based web browser optimized for speed and privacy. Created by developer Alex313031, it applies compiler optimizations (AVX2, SSE4, etc.) to the Chromium source code to produce a browser that benchmarks faster than stock Chrome on modern hardware.

Key Features

Thorium removes Google API integrations and telemetry from Chromium while keeping full extension support via the Chrome Web Store. It includes built-in ad blocking, HEVC/H.265 video codec support, and Widevine DRM for streaming services. The browser supports multiple platforms including Windows, Linux, macOS, and Android.

Performance is Thorium's main selling point — it uses aggressive compiler flags that take advantage of modern CPU instruction sets, resulting in measurably faster page loads and JavaScript execution compared to Chrome, Brave, or Edge.

Who Uses Thorium

Thorium appeals to power users who want Chrome-level compatibility and extension support with better performance and no Google tracking. It is popular among Linux users and privacy-conscious users who find Firefox too slow or incompatible with certain sites.

Limitations

As a one-person project, Thorium may lag behind on security patches compared to Chrome or Brave. The AVX2 requirement means it will not run on older CPUs. Updates are less frequent than mainstream browsers.
