What is ToTok?
ToTok is a free messaging and voice/video call application that was launched in 2019. Within a few months of its launch, ToTok gained immense popularity in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as a fast and secure alternative to other popular apps like WhatsApp, Skype, and FaceTime.
ToTok allows users to send text messages, make voice and video calls, and share images, videos, and other files with contacts. Some key features that contributed to ToTok's rapid growth in the UAE include:
- Free high-quality voice and video calls
- Fast and reliable performance even in areas with poor connectivity
- Encrypted messaging for privacy
- Group messaging and calling support
- Available on both iOS and Android platforms
However, in late 2019 and early 2020, it was removed from application stores over concerns that ToTok was being used for government surveillance. The app was developed by Breej Holding, a company with reported ties to Abu Dhabi intelligence services. While no conclusive evidence was found, the app was taken down due to the potential security risks.
As of 2022, ToTok is not available for download on application stores. However, for a short period of time, it served as a popular encrypted messaging platform with convenient voice/video call features in the UAE.
WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Skype, Mattermost, Viber, TeamSpeak, Tox, fcall.in, Zulip, magicApp, ePhone, Mobilevoip, Conversations, UppTalk, Decoy Digits, Yabb Messenger are some alternatives to ToTok.
