The series takes place on the fictional continent of Europa, which is based heavily on 1930s Europe. The first Valkyria Chronicles game was released in 2008 for the PlayStation 3 to critical acclaim.

The series focuses on the conflict between the Atlantic Federation, which resembles NATO forces, and the Autocratic Eastern Imperial Alliance, a coalition of countries resembling the Axis powers. This conflict is known as the Second Europan War.
