Vaping: Inhaling Aerosol from Vape Devices

Learn about vaping, including how vape devices work, the risks associated with nicotine addiction, and popular flavors and additives.

What is Vaping?

Vaping refers to the use of electronic cigarettes and vape devices to inhale and exhale an aerosol produced by heating a liquid inside the device. The liquid, referred to as vape juice or e-liquid, usually contains nicotine, flavorings, vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol, and other additives.

Vape devices heat the e-liquid to produce an inhalable aerosol that resembles cigarette smoke but without burning tobacco. This allows the user to simulate smoking by inhaling vapor instead of smoke. Vaping provides a physical sensation and flavor similar to traditional cigarettes but without the smoke and tar.

Vaping devices come in many shapes and sizes. Common types include vape pens, mods, pod systems, and tank systems. Users can customize their vaping experience by choosing e-liquids with varying nicotine strengths and flavors. Many people use vaping as a way to quit smoking cigarettes while still experiencing the nicotine hit and hand-to-mouth action of smoking.

While generally regarded as safer than smoking cigarettes, the long-term health effects of vaping are largely unknown. Vaping is not without risks. Most devices still deliver addictive nicotine, and some studies have found toxic chemicals and metals in vape aerosols. More research is needed to determine the safety and efficacy of vaping, especially compared to traditional cigarettes.
