VMware Harbor: Open Source Container Image Registry

An open source container image registry with role-based access control, scanning, and signatures for securing artifacts, helping organizations comply with regulations by controlling image replication across registries.

What is VMware Harbor?

VMware Harbor is an enterprise-class registry server that stores and distributes Docker and OCI images. It extends open source Docker Distribution by adding the functionalities usually required by users such as security, identity and management. These functionalities are implemented through a high available registry server and a cloud-native management console.

Harbor solves common challenges by providing:

  • **Role based access control** - Users and robot accounts are grouped into projects, where granular access permissions can be configured.
  • **Policy based image replication** - Images can be replicated (synchronized) between Harbor instances, with auto-retry on errors. The replication policy can be configured flexibly based on rules like event based, schedule based or on-demand.
  • **Vulnerability Scanning** - Harbor scans images regularly and warns users of vulnerabilities.
  • **LDAP/AD support** - Harbor integrates with existing enterprise LDAP/AD for user authentication and management.
  • **Image deletion & garbage collection** - Images can be deleted and their space can be recycled.
  • **Notary** - Image authenticity can be ensured.
  • **Graphical user portal** - User can easily browse, search repositories and manage projects.
  • **Auditing** - All Upload/Pull activities to/from Harbor are tracked.
  • **RESTful API** - RESTful APIs for most administrative operations, easy to integrate with external systems.
