Watch Dogs: Action-Adventure Series

Watch Dogs is an action-adventure video game series developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. The games follow hackers who have access to ctOS - a centralized operating system which controls the technological infrastructure of major cities. The protagonists use their hacking skills to infiltrate various networks and institutions to accomplish their missions.

What is Watch Dogs (Series)?

Watch Dogs is an action-adventure video game series developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. The series currently consists of three main installments - Watch Dogs (2014), Watch Dogs 2 (2016) and Watch Dogs: Legion (2020).

The games are set in an alternate near-future version of Earth, where cities use a centralized operating system called ctOS (Central Operating System) to control and interconnect everyday technology and infrastructure - from traffic lights and the electrical grid to public records and personal devices. This system is created by the fictional Blume Corporation.

The player takes on the role of a hacker - Marcus Holloway in WD2 and various playable characters in WD: Legion - who has access to ctOS. They are part of the hacking group DedSec and use their hacking skills to infiltrate networks, institutions and corporations to accomplish their own agendas - which usually align with helping innocents who are being harmed by said institutions.

A major theme across the games is the dichotomy between privacy and security - how ctOS promises security but enables invasion of privacy and mass surveillance. DedSec fights back against this, while also dealing with other threats from gangs, corporations and authorities in each game's story.

The gameplay mostly consists of third-person action-adventure elements set in the large open world cities of Chicago, San Francisco and London respectively. It also has stealth, shooting, driving and - most notably - hacking mechanics involving manipulation of technology to progress through objectives.
