Red Dead Redemption is an open world action-adventure western video game developed by Rockstar San Diego and published by Rockstar Games. It was released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles in May 2010.

Set in the declining years of the American Wild West in 1911, the game follows former outlaw John Marston, who is forced to hunt down his former gang members after his wife and son are taken hostage by the federal government. Marston must explore the fictionalized Western United States and Mexico to apprehend or kill Bill Williamson, Javier Escuella, Dutch van der Linde and other dangerous outlaws.

The game makes use of Rockstar's proprietary Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE), combined with Euphoria physics software for animations and rendering. It has an open world design that allows the player to freely roam its interactive landscapes on foot or by horseback. Gameplay elements include shootouts, hunting, horseback riding, interacting with non-player characters, and maintaining the character's honor rating through moral choices and deeds.

Red Dead Redemption was widely acclaimed and considered an industry benchmark upon release. Praised for its visuals, dynamically-generated music, overall atmosphere, gameplay, and story, it won year-end accolades, including Game of the Year awards from several gaming publications.
