What is Wii Shop Channel?
The Wii Shop Channel was an online shop for Nintendo's Wii and Wii U video game consoles. It allowed users to purchase and download digital games and applications to extend the functionality and libraries of their consoles.
The service specialized in offering two main types of software:
- WiiWare - Original games developed specifically for download and play on the Wii and Wii U.
- Virtual Console - Classic games from old consoles like NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, etc. offered in an emulated format.
The Wii Shop Channel had a point system in which users would purchase Wii Points to then spend on content. It featured new releases, popular downloads, and genres to browse. It officially closed in 2019 after over 13 years in operation.
The service expanded the catalogs of games and apps for Wii and Wii U beyond physical media. It enabled retro titles from past consoles to be played on modern Nintendo hardware through emulation. The Wii Shop Channel paved the way for the current digital storefronts on the Nintendo Switch and other modern consoles.
