Real-time, hyperlocal air quality data for individuals, schools, and community groups, powered by affordable sensors
Air Matters is an open-source, do-it-yourself air quality monitoring system for detecting particulate matter and gaseous air pollutants. It is designed to be built and deployed by individuals, schools, community groups, and other grassroots air quality monitoring initiatives seeking fine-grained, real-time air quality data.
The system uses affordable sensors connected to single-board computers like Raspberry Pi to continuously measure pollution levels. The data is streamed to the Air Matters platform where it can be viewed on a public map with data from monitors all around the world. This allows anyone to check local air quality in their area.
By making air quality monitoring more accessible, Air Matters aims to empower communities with the data they need to understand pollution in their neighborhoods, identify hotspots, and advocate for policy changes. The open-source model also enables the system to be customized, improved, and expanded upon by the community.
