What is Alignak?
Alignak is an open source monitoring framework designed to monitor IT infrastructure components such as network devices, servers, applications, and services. It is developed in Python and licensed under the Affero GPL v3 license.
Alignak is compatible with Nagios so it can reuse existing Nagios plugins and configurations. This makes it easy for current Nagios users to migrate to Alignak. It provides additional features beyond what Nagios offers including improved visibility, flexibility, performance and reliability.
Some key features of Alignak include:
- Monitoring of network services like SMTP, POP3, HTTP, NNTP, ICMP, SNMP, etc.
- Monitoring of host resources such as processor load, disk usage, system logs, etc.
- Monitoring via both agent-based and agentless methods
- Advanced notification functionality through multiple contacts and escalation policies
- Support for redundancy and failover through a master/slave architecture
- A modern responsive web UI for viewing monitoring status, alerts, reports, etc.
- REST API for integration with other management systems
- Built-in performance metrics for monitoring Alignak itself
With its enhanced monitoring capabilities and flexibility to scale out monitoring deployments, Alignak serves as a good open source alternative to commercial products for medium and large environments.
