Avaaz.org: Online Platform for Global Activism

Avaaz.org empowers citizens worldwide to organize petitions and campaigns on global, regional, and national issues, enabling millions to take action through petitions, media funding, and decision maker contact.

What is AVAAZ.ORG?

Avaaz.org is an online platform for activism that allows citizens from around the world to organize petitions, emails and campaigns aimed at world leaders on important global, regional and national issues. After registering with the website, members can start and sign petitions, fund campaigns and organize offline protests and events.

Avaaz, meaning "voice" in several languages, was officially launched in 2007 with a mission to organize citizens of all nations to close the gap between the world we have and the world most people everywhere want. In a relatively short time, Avaaz has grown into one of the largest and most powerful online activist networks.

Some of the features that make Avaaz effective include:

  • Global reach - With over 55 million members spread across 194 countries, Avaaz can bring scale and pressure on governments and corporations from all over the world.
  • Agility - The digital model facilitates quick mobilization for timely, urgent issues
  • Flexibility - The Avaaz community can support hundreds of issues ranging from climate change to human rights.
  • Independence - Avaaz remains free from government and corporate funding, relying entirely on member contributions.

Over the years, Avaaz has run hugely successful campaigns against corruption, for climate action, for protecting the internet and more. The goal is always to bring rapid, large-scale change on pressing key issues. Though criticized at times for oversimplifying issues, there's no doubt Avaaz has demonstrated the power of incorporating tech in activism.
