What is Blasphemous?

Blasphemous is a challenging 2D side-scrolling action platformer set in a nightmarish world inspired by Spanish Catholicism and the Spanish Inquisition. Developed by The Game Kitchen and published by Team17, Blasphemous casts players in the role of The Penitent One, a masked man on a sacred quest to free the world of evil and earn redemption for his sins.

Armed with a barbed whip and sword, players traverse a hellish landscape of twisting towers, dangerous platforming sections, and horrifying bosses. The world is filled with religious iconography and themes of heresy, with many enemies and locations drawing names and inspiration from Christian theology and Scripture.

Gameplay in Blasphemous focuses on fast-paced combat, with the penitent able to perform combos and parries with his melee weapons. While combat is challenging, with many enemies able to kill the player in just a few hits, game mechanics like the Fervour system allow players to heal themselves or perform powerful attacks after building up energy from landing hits.

In addition to combat, Blasphemous incorporates Metroidvania elements that encourage exploration to find upgrades like more health, stamina, and damage. The world is intricately designed but often confusing to navigate, with areas looping back on themselves in ingenious ways.
