What is Code Spaces?

Code Spaces was a cloud-based code hosting service geared towards software developers and teams. It offered features like git and SVN repositories for source code management, virtual machines for development and testing, web-based IDEs, and APIs for automation and integration.

Code Spaces was founded in 2012 by a small team with experience in the hosting and cloud infrastructure industry. They sought to provide an easy-to-use yet robust platform for developers to host and manage code repositories and collaborate with teammates.

The service gained modest traction in the developer community, attracting customers with its flexible plans and strong reliability. However, in June 2014, Code Spaces suffered a devastating hack that ultimately forced the company to shut down operations.

The attack began with a distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attack that disrupted connectivity to Code Spaces' servers. While trying to regain control, the attackers gained access to Code Spaces' AWS management console credentials.

The hackers proceeded to delete nearly all of Code Spaces' Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) volumes, eliminating the bulk of customer data and backups. Despite attempts to recover, the damage proved catastrophic and irrecoverable.

With little remaining infrastructure and data, Code Spaces announced they were ceasing operations. It served as a cautionary tale about properly securing cloud administrator accounts and implementing strategies for data backup and disaster recovery.
