A physics puzzle game series where players use basic materials to build machines that solve increasingly challenging puzzles, delivering a pink balloon past obstacles to a finish line.
Fantastic Contraption is a series of physics puzzle video games developed by Colin Northway and Sarah Northway. In the games, players are tasked with building machines out of basic materials such as wooden planks and wheels to transport a pink balloon from a start point to a goal point across terrain filled with obstacles.
The original Flash game was released in 2008 and quickly gained popularity for its innovative gameplay combining elements of building games and physics puzzles. Two sequels were later created, Fantastic Contraption 2: The Ambassadors Revenge in 2009 and Fantastic Contraption: The Even More Fantastic Edition in 2011, which expanded and refined the gameplay with new parts, puzzles, and features.
A new version, simply titled Fantastic Contraption, was released in 2016 for VR headsets. This game used the immersive environment of VR to allow players to walk around their contraptions from all angles while building them. It once again challenged players to solve puzzles in creative ways using the interactive motion controllers.
Across all games, the core appeal lies in the sandbox-style creativity blended with logical thinking required to build machines that successfully transport the balloon. Solving puzzles often requires iterative testing, reworking designs that failed, and experimenting with unusual solutions. This gives the series great replay value beyond completing all the stock levels.
