What is Fate/stay night?

Fate/stay night is a Japanese visual novel developed by Type-Moon and originally released as an adult game for Windows PCs in 2004. It follows the story of Shirou Emiya, a high school student living in Fuyuki City who becomes involved in a secret magical conflict known as the Holy Grail War.

In the Holy Grail War, seven mages summon heroic spirits from legend and myth to battle for control of the Holy Grail, an omnipotent wish-granting device. Shirou summons Saber, the spirit of King Arthur, to fight for him. Together with his friend Rin Tohsaka and classmate Sakura Matou, Shirou finds himself drawn deeper into the conflict between the seven mage masters and their seven heroic spirit servants.

Fate/stay night features three story routes the player can take, each focused on the growing relationship between Shirou Emiya and one of the three main female characters - Saber, Rin, and Sakura. It combines elements of action, romance, and drama within a urban fantasy setting rich with lore inspired by world mythologies and legends.

Originally released as an adult title, Fate/stay night later received all-ages versions that removed the adult content but retained the same story. It has grown into a hugely popular franchise spanning anime, manga, games, and more.
