What is Forge of Empires?

Forge of Empires is a free-to-play, browser-based strategy game developed and published by InnoGames. Players start in the Stone Age and advance their civilization through several historical eras including the Bronze Age, Iron Age, Early Middle Ages, High Middle Ages, Colonial Age, and more.

The core gameplay revolves around building up your own city, managing resources, recruiting an army, and battling computer opponents and other players. As your city grows in size and advances to new ages, you'll be able to construct new buildings, upgrade existing ones, conduct research to unlock new units and technologies, and expand your territory on the world map.

A key aspect of Forge of Empires is its focus on offense and defense. You can attack nearby provinces or players to capture their resources and plunder goods. However, your city can also come under attack, requiring you to build defensive structures and keep a well-trained army to fend off invaders. This creates an ongoing need to balance your offensive and defensive capabilities.

There's also depth in arranging your city layout for optimal production chains and population happiness. Positioning buildings together can provide synergy bonuses. The game features some light resource management as you balance food, coins, supplies, and population. There's always something to tweak or optimize in your ever-growing settlement.

While largely player-versus-environment focused in the early stages, Forge of Empires opens up more direct player-versus-player combat in the later ages. You can join a guild to take part in guild expeditions and large-scale battles against other guilds. There's also a recurring tournament mode called Guild vs Guild Battlegrounds.

In terms of monetization, the game is free-to-play but relies heavily on optional purchases and incentives to speed progress. Over time, premium purchases can confer greater advantages compared to purely free players. However, free players can still be competitive via consistent daily engagement with the game.
