Open-source, cross-platform real-time strategy game based on the Dune universe novels by Frank Herbert, allowing players to control factions in battle for Arrakis' valuable spice.
Dune Legacy is an open-source, cross-platform real-time strategy (RTS) game based on the popular Dune series of sci-fi novels written by Frank Herbert. First released in 1998, Dune Legacy aims to recreate the story, characters, and setting from the original Dune games released in 1992 by Westwood Studios.
In Dune Legacy, players take control of one of three factions – the noble Atreides, insidious Ordos, or ruthless Harkonnen – each with their own strengths and abilities. The ultimate goal is to secure dominance over the desert planet Arrakis and harvest spice – the most valuable substance in the universe – through establishment of military strongholds, development of technology, and outmaneuvering foes. The planet is inhabited by native Fremen tribes who can be both allies and enemies.
Key gameplay elements include construction of concrete and steel structures, generation of renewable power, development of combat technologies, and control of armored military units for offense and defense. Players must carefully manage spice harvesting operations to fund their factions’ activities. The game emphasizes strategic build queues, resource balancing, technology research, and large-scale warfare. Multiplayer matches can accommodate up to 6 players.
Dune Legacy delivers updated visuals including high-resolution textures and support for 1080p displays while remaining faithful to the original Dune games. As an open-source project relying on community involvement, Dune Legacy sees ongoing improvements from fans and is available free of charge for Windows, Linux, and Mac platforms.
