Explore an open-source real-time strategy game based on the Total Annihilation engine, featuring new models, textures, and asymmetric gameplay for two factions.
Beyond All Reason (BAR) is an open-source real-time strategy game based on the engine of the classic RTS Total Annihilation. It started as a Total Annihilation mod but has since evolved into a standalone game with its own original assets and gameplay.
BAR features two playable factions with completely unique units, structures, and asymmetric tech trees, leading to very different playstyles. The two sides are the Confederate Revolutionaries, a ragtag group fighting for independence, and the Civilian Administration Forces, the powerful ruling government trying to retain control.
The core gameplay revolves around gathering resources, building bases and armies, and battling the opponent in epic clashes involving hundreds of units at a time. Maps can support up to 8 players. BAR focuses on large-scale battles with long games and big armies rather than small skirmishes. There is also an extensive unit veterancy system, smart orders system, and meta/orbital weaponry.
BAR runs on an upgraded version of the Total Annihilation engine, supporting modern resolutions and graphics. It features over 300 unique 3D models created from scratch for the project. The game has a strong community contributing new models, textures, and mods.
BAR aims to recapture the magic of classic RTS gameplay with a emphasis on strategy over clicks per minute. With asymmetrical factions, smart unit AI, and epic clashes, it provides compelling sandbox-style real-time strategy fun.
