Warcraft III is a popular real-time strategy video game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment in 2002. It is the third main title in the Warcraft franchise, and features four diverse playable races: the humans of the Alliance faction, the orcs and trolls of the Horde faction, and the night elves and undead of the Sentinels and Scourge factions respectively.
Players must build towns and assemble armies composed of medieval fantasy staples - knights, sorcerers, archers, dragons and so on. A single-player campaign tells an epic story, and numerous multiplayer options are available as well - players can play over the internet and local area networks, and create custom maps or scenarios with the in-built World Editor.
The gameplay revolves around players controlling a number of buildings and units to gather resources, build a military force, and ultimately defeat their opponents. Combat between groups of units plays out in real time, so micromanaging one's army and deploying units effectively is vital to success.
The game received critical acclaim upon release, and has been cited as one of the most influential real-time strategy games of all time. With its setting, engaging multiplayer gameplay and machinima capabilities, Warcraft III established itself as both a competitive esports title and a fertile ground for custom creations.
