What is Warzone 2100?

Warzone 2100 is an open-source real-time strategy (RTS) video game originally developed by Pumpkin Studios and published by Eidos Interactive in 1999. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic setting after humanity has been nearly destroyed by nuclear warfare.

In the single-player campaign mode, the player takes command of the final remnants of human military forces. They must slowly rebuild civilization by gathering resources, researching technologies, constructing bases and fighting hostile enemies. The campaign progresses through the storyline of trying to piece together what caused the war that nearly destroyed humanity.

Key gameplay elements involve harvesting resources, building structures and conduits, researching technologies and producing combat units on the battlefield. Players must balance economic, technological and military power to overcome rivals. Terrain and experience levels of units are additional tactical considerations.

Since the source code was released by Pumpkin Studios in 2004, Warzone 2100 has been maintained and updated by the community. It runs natively on Linux, Mac and Windows platforms. Gameplay modes include single player, multiplayer (LAN/internet), and a customizable skirmish mode against computer opponents.
