A series of combat flight simulator video games developed by 1C Game Studios, focusing on tactical air combat using period fighter and ground attack aircraft in various Eastern Front scenarios.
IL-2 Sturmovik is a long-running series of combat flight simulator video games developed by Russian studio 1C Game Studios and published by Ubisoft. The series began in 2001 with IL-2 Sturmovik, which focused on tactical air combat between Soviet and German forces on the Eastern Front of World War II.
The IL-2 games are known for their realistic flight models, detailed damage modeling, and inclusion of a wide variety of authentic Soviet and German aircraft from the period. The original IL-2 Sturmovik featured campaigns focused on the Battle of Moscow, Battle of Stalingrad, and Battle of Kursk. It was praised for its atmospheric battles and challenging flight mechanics.
The series continued with sequels like IL-2 Sturmovik: Forgotten Battles in 2003 which introduced new maps and aircraft. 2004's IL-2 Sturmovik: Aces added a dynamic campaign mode. The last title in the main series was IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 in 2006, which compiled content from all the previous releases and added new content of its own.
In 2013, 1C Game Studios released IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad which was built on a new graphics engine and focused on the pivotal air battle. It was followed by Battle of Moscow, Battle of Kuban, and Battle of Bodenplatte titles which built out the warfare on the Eastern Front through the later war years. The new engine brought vastly improved graphics, flight models, and damage systems.
The modern IL-2 series continues to have an avid fan base and receive consistent updates and new content, with tank combat recently added as well. It is considered one of the premier combat flight sim franchises and sets the benchmark for realistic WWII aerial combat simulations.
