PlanetSide: Massively Multiplayer First-Person Shooters

A sci-fi universe massively multiplayer online first-person shooter game with large open-world environments, territorial battles, and resources capture

What is PlanetSide (Series)?

PlanetSide is a series of massively multiplayer online first-person shooter games developed by Daybreak Game Company. The series is set in a sci-fi universe where three factions (Terran Republic, New Conglomerate, and Vanu Sovereignty) battle for territorial control and resources across several planets.

The first PlanetSide game launched in 2003 featuring persistent worlds and battles with over 300 players simultaneously. Players choose one of the three factions, create customized soldier characters, and engage in large-scale combat to capture facilities, equipment, and territory. The original game world included ten continent style maps across four worlds.

PlanetSide 2, launched in 2012, features updated graphics and gameplay while retaining the large-scale, persistent world MMOFPS design. It introduced features like weapons customization and a free-to-play model supported by microtransactions and battle passes. The world includes eleven map zones focused on a single planet, Auraxis.

The PlanetSide series pioneered the persistent world MMOFPS genre combining features from RPGs and first-person shooters into massive open-world PVP environments. The games stand out for enabling enormous battles not possible in traditional multiplayer shooters, while letting players impact an ongoing war for planetary domination.
