What is Halo (Series)?

Halo is a military science fiction media franchise managed by 343 Industries and published by Xbox Game Studios. The central focus of the franchise builds on the experiences of Master Chief John-117, one of a group of supersoldiers code-named Spartans, and his artificial intelligence (AI) companion, Cortana.

The original trilogy centers on an interstellar war between humanity and an alliance of aliens known as the Covenant. The Covenant, led by their religious leaders called the Prophets, worship an ancient civilization known as the Forerunners, who perished while defeating the parasitic Flood. Many of the games center on the experiences of Master Chief John-117, one of the last of the Spartan-II program, and his artificial intelligence (AI) companion, Cortana.

The first Halo video game, Halo: Combat Evolved, was released on November 15, 2001 for the Xbox. Subsequent games were developed by Bungie and later by 343 Industries which Microsoft created in 2009 to manage the Halo franchise after Bungie became independent. The games in the series have been praised as being among the best first-person shooters on a video game console. The series has inspired multiple spin-off games, novels, comics, live-action shorts, and a forthcoming TV series.
