What is Counter-Strike (Series)?
Counter-Strike is a series of multiplayer first-person shooter games developed by Valve Corporation. It originated as a modification (mod) for Half-Life in 1999 before being expanded into a standalone game that was released in 2000.
The gameplay in Counter-Strike pits a team of counter-terrorists against a team of terrorists in a series of rounds. Each round is won by either completing the mission objective or eliminating the opposing force. For example, in a bomb defusal scenario, counter-terrorists must prevent terrorists from planting and detonating a bomb, while the terrorists must either plant and detonate the bomb or kill all members of the counter-terrorist team.
Over the years, Counter-Strike has seen improved graphics, new maps and weapons, and plenty of other upgrades. Some major releases in the series include Counter-Strike 1.6, Counter Strike: Source, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
With its competitive multiplayer, team-based gameplay, and reliance on skill and strategy over upgrades or gear, Counter-Strike has become one of the most influential and popular online shooters since its release. As of 2022, Global Offensive has over 500,000 concurrent players per month, showing the lasting impact this innovative series has had even decades later.
