What is Painkiller (Series)?

Painkiller is a series of first-person shooter video games developed by Polish studio People Can Fly and published by DreamCatcher Interactive. The first Painkiller game was released in 2004 for Microsoft Windows.

In Painkiller, the player takes the role of Daniel Garner, a man who finds himself in Purgatory after dying in a car accident with his wife. He makes a deal with a demon named Samael to fight his way through Purgatory battling demons and the undead in order to be reunited with his wife.

The player fights through various environments like graveyards, monasteries, military bases, and opera houses battling a variety of supernatural enemies. Weapons include shotguns, stakeguns, grenade launchers, and a spinning blade weapon called the Painkiller. There are also environmental hazards the player can use against enemies.

Two expansion packs were released for the original Painkiller game, Battle Out of Hell and Overdose, adding new chapters, enemies, and weapons. Painkiller: Hell & Damnation, a remake/sequel hybrid, was released in 2012 with updated graphics and gameplay.
