What is Google Notebook?
Google Notebook was a free web-based application launched by Google in 2006. It allowed users to clip and organize content from web pages, add their own notes and comments, and share notebooks with others.
Some key features of Google Notebook included:
- Clipping - Users could clip portions of web pages to save and organize in notebooks
- Annotations - Add notes, comments, drawings to clipped content or blank notebook pages
- Notebooks - Notebooks to organize your clipped content, notes, etc. Could have multiple sections
- Searching - Search through content in your notebooks
- Sharing - Share full notebooks or individual notes with other Google Notebook users
Google Notebook gained a loyal following amongst researchers, journalists, students and others who used it to save, organize and share information. However, Google decided to discontinue Google Notebook in 2012 to focus on other products. Many fans were disappointed when this useful tool was retired after 6 years.
Since Google Notebook contained much valuable data from users, Google gave users the ability to export their full notebook data before shutting down the service. Several alternative services have sought to fill the void left by Google Notebook's discontinuation.
