What is Gowalla?
Gowalla was a location-based social networking website and mobile app that allowed users to check-in at various venues and locations to connect with friends and share places they visited. It was launched in 2007 by Josh Williams, Scott Raymond, Alam Kidwai, and Jeff Holden.
Some key features of Gowalla included:
- Checking in at locations like restaurants, parks, concerts etc. Users could check-in and add photos or tips about the place.
- Earning virtual items or pins for checking in. There were special pins for different categories like food, nightlife, outdoors etc.
- Leaderboards showed who had collected the most or rarest pins in an area.
- Trips allowed users to group check-ins from a vacation or event.
- Users could follow friends and see places they had checked in on a map.
In 2011, at its peak Gowalla had around 600,000 users. However, it struggled to compete with other services like Foursquare. In late 2011 it was acquired by Facebook and officially shut down in March 2012 so Facebook could integrate features into its own services.
