What is Impro-Visor?
Impro-Visor is a unique music composition and notation software designed specifically for jazz musicians and educators. Developed at the Berklee College of Music, Impro-Visor allows users to quickly enter melodies, harmonies, and rhythms by singing into a microphone, playing a MIDI keyboard, or using the mouse to input notes into a staff.
A key feature of Impro-Visor is its intelligent harmonic analysis and generation capabilities. The software listens to the melody entered by the user and offers suggestions for the underlying harmony, allowing even those with little music theory knowledge to create sophisticated chord progressions. Users can accept Impro-Visor's suggestions or override them to tailor the harmonization.
Once the basic elements are entered, Impro-Visor automatically generates a lead sheet style score notated with melody, chord symbols, and bass notes. The music can then be edited and formatted using the built-in notation tools. Lead sheets can be exported as PDFs, MusicXML files, MIDI files, and in other standard formats.
In addition to composition and notation, Impro-Visor provides tools for computer-assisted improvisation, allowing users to generate improvised solos over chord changes that follow jazz idioms and styles.
