What is MetaZ?
MetaZ is an open-source virtual reality platform that aims to provide similar capabilities to Meta's VR headsets and software, but on an open platform at a lower cost. It was created by an independent group of VR developers and engineers to provide an alternative to Meta's closed ecosystem.
The MetaZ headset is compatible with SteamVR and provides roomscale tracking, hand controllers, and high resolution displays at consumer pricing, unlike many other enterprise VR headsets. The software platform is open source and designed to enable connecting to multiple types of VR devices from different manufacturers.
Key capabilities and components of the MetaZ platform include:
- Open-source headset design files and software under permissive licenses to enable third party manufacturing and modifications
- Headset specifications target 1440x1600 per eye resolution, 110 degree FOV, and inside-out tracking for fully mobile roomscale VR
- OpenXR and SteamVR plugin support to work with a variety of VR content stores and game engines
- Multiplayer networking and social features on the MetaZ software platform for connecting users across headsets
- Active developer community building new applications and experiences to expand the platform's capabilities
The MetaZ project aims to continue advancing immersive virtual reality technology while promoting open standards and interoperability. The developers welcome community contributions and participation from both users and other VR companies.
